Redux

Sullivan and Strumpf Sydney 2008

In 2008, Kate Shaw presented Redux at Sullivan + Strumpf Fine Art, Sydney, a pivotal solo exhibition that followed a significant studio residency in Brooklyn (specifically Williamsburg), New York. Redux marked a moment when Shaw was transitioning beyond her earlier exhibitions—such as Drifter in Brisbane and Visitant in Darwin—to explore richer forms of abstraction and color layering within her painterly landscapes

The works featured in Redux exhibit Shaw's signature poured paint technique: richly saturated acrylics mixed with resin, glitter, and pigment, creating atmospheric, otherworldly landscapes. These were developed while in residence in Williamsburg, where the urban context and her engagement with Flux Factory—her studio at the time—allowed her to experiment with scale, texture, and the interplay of abstraction and suggestion. The residency context encouraged a melding of psychological interiority and external natural forces, resulting in hallucinogenic vistas that probe themes of ecological tension and transformation

Redux, presented at Sullivan + Strumpf in Sydney in 2008, can be seen as a bridge between Shaw’s earlier figurative abstraction and later monumental landscape–abstraction hybrids. The exhibition reflects her ongoing inquiry into how natural processes—erosion, alchemy, cycles of creation and destruction—can be echoed in pigment flow and chromatic layering. It marked a turning point in her career, marrying the raw energy of her New York studio experience with her evolving visual practice rooted in environmental and psychological landscapes

I acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of the land on which I live and work, the Wurundjeri and Bunurong People of the Kulin Nation, and recognise their continuing connection to land, waters, and culture. I pay my respects to their Elders past and present, and extend that respect to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples today.
