Continuum 3 minute HD Video 2018

Continuum (2018) is a video work by Kate Shaw that brings her vivid, otherworldly landscapes into motion, expanding her practice into immersive, time-based media. Created in collaboration with animator Alina Shagidullina and sound designer Jimmer Sudette, the work is a meditation on the cycles and continuities that underpin natural and biological systems—ranging from geological time to the spiralling structure of DNA. Shaw’s fluid, marbled imagery slowly evolves in a hypnotic loop, evoking the endless unfolding of life and matter. Shagidullina’s animation breathes movement into Shaw’s painted forms, while Sudette’s layered, ambient soundscape heightens the work’s meditative and cosmic qualities. Premiered in Shaw’s solo exhibition Continuum at Martin Browne Contemporary in 2018, the work offers a deeply reflective, multisensory experience that positions the natural world as both ancient and evolving—endlessly in flux.video 2018.

Continuum was featured in the exhibition Under the Subway at the Museum of the Moving Image in New York 2019 and of the collection at the Rockhampton Art Museum.

Kate Shaw's video work The Spectator (2008) delves into the complex relationship between humanity and the natural world, particularly in the context of technological mediation. By integrating YouTube-sourced footage of natural disasters with her signature poured paint visuals, Shaw crafts a narrative that examines how technology both distances us from and provides immediate access to environmental catastrophes . This juxtaposition highlights the paradox of our modern experience: being spectators to nature's fury through screens, yet physically removed from its direct impact. The work prompts reflection on our passive consumption of such events and the broader implications of our detachment from the environment.netsvictoria.org.au

The Spectator has been recognized for its poignant commentary on environmental issues and is part of the Rockhampton Art Gallery's permanent collection, underscoring its significance in contemporary art discourse .
